Exhibition Opening: Into the Streets by Leandro Justen
The "Into The Streets" Pride Exhibition showcases a collection of Leandro Justen's powerful images documenting the contemporary LGBTQ+ movement in New York City. This exhibition features images of large-scale community-organized events, such as the Queer Liberation and Brooklyn Liberation marches, which filled the streets of New York with calls for justice and liberation.
The "Into the Streets" exhibition additionally features two black-and-white portraits of three young queer New Yorkers: Zariya, Angel, and José, captured in 2020 and 2024. These portraits highlight a beautiful friendship formed on the streets of NYC during community gatherings that called for justice and the protection of LGBTQ communities of color. The first portrait, taken in 2020 during the "A Ball To Action" protest, captures the beginning of Zariya, Angel, and José's friendship. The second portrait, taken on May 24, 2024, marks a touching reunion nearly four years later, offering a glimpse into the evolution of their queer identities since their 2020 portrait.
