New Year’s Eve in New York: Times Square Ball Drop & Events

Activities
Food + Drink

New Year’s Eve in New York comes down to one decision: do you want to be in the Times Square crowd when the ball drops, or would you rather count down somewhere else in the city? Either way, the city gives you options, from the countdown at One Times Square to fireworks over Central Park and long dinners that roll straight into midnight.

Romer Hell’s Kitchen sits just west of Broadway at 851 Eighth Avenue, which puts the ball drop, the West Side’s restaurants and the city’s other countdowns within reach. Closer still, So & So’s, our piano bar and restaurant behind the blue door on West 52nd Street, brings live entertainment and a cocktail list built for celebrating to the hotel itself. Here is how to plan New Year’s Eve in New York this year, whichever kind of night you are after.

Watch the Times Square Ball Drop

The Times Square ball drop is the city’s headline event. The ball rises to the top of the pole at One Times Square in the early evening and begins its 60-second descent at 11:59 p.m., with confetti, live performances and a crowd of thousands counting down together.

Watching in person is free and no tickets are needed, but it takes commitment. Viewing areas open in the afternoon and fill on a first-come, first-served basis, and once you leave your spot you cannot come back to it.

  • Address: One Times Square, 1475 Broadway
  • Hours: Thursday, December 31, 2026. Viewing areas opened at 3:00 p.m. in 2025; the ball drops at 11:59 p.m.
  • Getting there from Romer: Viewing areas have been reached through entry points on Sixth and Eighth Avenues, including West 49th and West 52nd Streets, so plan your route on foot and allow extra time for security checks.
  • Good to know: There are no portable restrooms or food vendors inside the viewing areas, and backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, chairs and alcohol are not allowed. Eighth Avenue has closed to pedestrians and traffic around the viewing area from late afternoon in past years.

See Fireworks and the Midnight Run in Central Park

If you would rather ring in the new year outdoors with a different view, Central Park puts on its own show. New York Road Runners’ Midnight Run starts at midnight on the 72nd Street Transverse, with music, dancing and around 20 minutes of fireworks over the park.

You do not have to be running to enjoy it. The fireworks can be seen across a wide stretch of the park, and it is an easy walk up from Hell’s Kitchen.

  • Address: 72nd Street Transverse, Central Park
  • Hours: Thursday, December 31, 2026. The run and fireworks start at midnight; the transverse closes to the public from 7:15 p.m.
  • Getting there from Romer: Walk north on Eighth Avenue to Columbus Circle and into the park. Allow about 30 minutes.
  • Good to know: Runners need to register through NYRR in advance. Dress for the cold, since you will be outside for a while before midnight.

Head to Brooklyn for Fireworks at Grand Army Plaza

Prospect Park’s New Year’s Eve celebration has been a Brooklyn tradition for more than four decades, with live music from 10:00 p.m. and fireworks over Grand Army Plaza at midnight. It is free, family-friendly and a very Brooklyn way to welcome the new year.

  • Address: Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Park, Brooklyn
  • Hours: December 31; music from 10:00 p.m. and fireworks at midnight in 2025. Check for 2026 details closer to the date.
  • Getting there from Romer: Take the subway to Grand Army Plaza. Allow around 45 minutes, and longer on the way back.
  • Good to know: The Prospect Park Alliance asks guests to RSVP online.

Book New Year’s Eve Dinner in Hell’s Kitchen

For many people, New Year’s Eve in New York starts at a table, and the closest one is downstairs: So & So’s serves its supper-club menu inside the hotel (more on that below). Beyond the hotel, restaurants across Hell’s Kitchen run set menus and later seatings on December 31, so you can have dinner, step out for the countdown or stay put and toast midnight where you are.

Ninth Avenue is the neighborhood’s main restaurant strip, with Thai, Italian and plenty more within a few blocks of the hotel. Book early: December 31 is one of the busiest nights of the year, and many restaurants take deposits or charge a fixed price.

  • Address: Ninth Avenue and the surrounding blocks of Hell’s Kitchen
  • Hours: Varies by restaurant; book as early as you can
  • Getting there from Romer: Walk one block west to Ninth Avenue.
  • Good to know: If you plan to watch the ball drop afterward, remember that you will not be able to enter a full viewing area late in the evening.
